Panther Profile: Maria Silva Orebegozo, Colombia

For progressed Global First Year student and FIU double Marketing & Hospitality major, Maria Silva from Colombia, its all about making the most of her time and choosing the right career path through hands on experience.

Alpha Kappa Psi: Maria is the Vice President of professional development for the FIU Business fraternity. She credits this position for her greatly improved public speaking skills.

South Beach Food & Wine Festival: For two years in a row now, Maria has worked for the world famous festival. This past year she worked in student recruitment for the event, serving as a liaison for guests, event managers and student volunteers. The experience helped her realize that she wants her future career to involve event management.

For Colombia: Proud to be working with an organization that represents her home country, this opportunity has allowed her to interact with entrepreneurs from Colombia and even work closely with the former mayor of Miami.

Action Club: The purpose of Action Club is to push you to pursue a goal and Maria is a hopeful entrepreneur who wants to start her own business, as soon as this fall! She is participating in Action Club as a way of staying motivated and focused on achieving this.

Career Accelerator (CAP): Maria is very involved with the Career Accelerator program (CAP) at Global FIU. She believes it was the Career Accelerator program that helped her realized she wanted to pursue marketing. CAP helped her explore her options and figure out what she really wanted to do as well as build up her resume and prepare for these crucial internship interviews.

Social Ventures (internship): Through the Career Accelerator program, Maria landed an internship for this summer with “Social Ventures,” an organization in Miami which partners with local startups that have a social background and impact on the community. She will be working on their marketing strategy, assisting them with social media, and helping them plan and implement educational events. She is excited to spend her summer gaining experience alongside fellow interns and work with fellow entrepreneurs who share her dream of growing their businesses.

Optimum: From a connection she made the at FIU Career Fair, Maria got the opportunity to job shadow at Optimum, a digital marketing agency in Miami.

Miami: Maria loves living and studying in Miami. She appreciates that she is in the United States, yet only a three-hour flight from home. As a Colombian, she loves the Latin culture the city offers and the fact that she has made friends from all over Latin America. She has plans to visit friends in Costa Rica, as well as host new Miami friends in her hometown of Bogota. She enjoys the nightlife, music, dancing, and food in Miami – as well as being close to beautiful beaches!
