Why the United States?

“I wanted to study in the US because of the practical, hands-on US education system. I also felt that it was the best place to pursue my major, psychology. I want to be a successful psychologist one day and I felt that the United States would be the best place to gain different experiences that will help me accomplish this.”

The Global First Year Program:

“The Global First year program provides everything an international student needs to adjust to life in the United States. The Global First year staff have helped me get used to the new culture here and make Miami feel like my home. They are like my family here, I know I can reach out to them for help anytime and they will help me, without hesitation.”

Making things happen:

“I knew I really wanted to gain valuable research experience in my field of psychology as quickly as possible, so I persistently searched for research opportunities and spoke to my professors about how I could gain experience. I achieved a paid position as a psychology research lab assistant and have been working six to eight hours every week collecting data, performing questionnaires and conducting research for the psychology department. Opportunities are out there as long as you seek them!”

Involvement on campus:

“In addition to my lab assistant position, I have been chosen as a 2017 Peer Advisor, International Student Ambassador, Vice President of the Residence Hall Council, committee member for AIESEC Miami, and as an intern for Startup FIU. I am also involved with the Global First Year Career Accelerator Program and working on receiving my FIU Global Learning Medallion. It is a lot, but I want to take advantage of all the opportunities I have here and build an amazing resume, so I can get a great job after I graduate from FIU.”

She really is a star student who has made FIU her home and taken advantage of all the opportunities she has here. The Global First Year staff is very proud of her and her accomplishments!”
