Last week, Global First Year Career Accelerator (CAP) students participated in a series of networking events and professional development opportunities that culminated with the FIU career fair on Thursday. The events were a great opportunity for students to prepare and build their confidence ahead of interactions with potential employers.

On Monday, John Swartz, the Career Accelerator program advisor hosted a session for CAP students on how to prepare for the career fair. Almost 20 students attended the session which covered: the importance of attending the career fair, how to research employers, making first impressions, the elevator pitch, asking smart questions, what to wear, resumes, and how to follow-up with employers.

“Attending John’s career fair prep session was really helpful to me because after talking about things like what to say when you meet with employers at the career fair, I felt much more comfortable and relaxed about going,” said Global First Year student from Venezuela, Ana Pacella.

“Resume Fest” took place on Tuesday, with over 30 CAP students having their resumes critiqued by professional recruiters from various industries. Students had about a half hour of one-on-one time with professionals to go over their resumes and discuss how to make their resumes more relevant to their preferred industry, as well as more presentable overall.

“This was really a great opportunity for students, since these professionals critiquing resumes at the event are from different industries and are the people actually on the front lines of hiring,” said John Swartz, Career Accelerator Program advisor.

FIU Global student participating in "Speed Mentoring"

A “Speed Mentoring” event took place on Wednesday, which was a different spin on “speed dating.” Students who participated had eight minutes with a professional mentor. During that time they could ask the professional about anything related to professional development, including questions about internships, networking, and how students can prepare themselves now for future opportunities.

The annual FIU Career fair took place on Thursday in GC on campus. The event was open to all majors and featured more than 80 employers from a vast array of industries and companies. Most students attended the career fair looking for internship opportunities, but many went just to improve their communication skills and learn how to relate their experiences to employers.

“I advise students to start attending the Career Fair early on in their college career so they can build confidence, deliver their elevator pitch, and learn how the process works. That way, their chances of successfully landing an internship from the event increase each year,” said Swartz.

“It was a great experience to attend the career fair and events leading up to it, I am feeling more and more comfortable talking to employers and now I have a better idea of the kind of internship I want for the summer,” said Global First Year and CAP student, Ana Pacella.
